Catching light: within light, for solo alto saxophone, is part of a larger collection of solo works that explore the many ways in which light travels through the natural world. This piece focuses on the natural phenomenon of crepuscular rays. The concept of these rays creates a polarized observation of light and dark; what is seen and what is hidden. The piece focuses on this dichotomy, translating the visual separation into an aural experience; what is heard and what is hidden. As abstract art is an important element to my compositional process when making formal and structural decision, this piece takes inspiration from the paintings of Gina Parr, specifically her work “A Series of Giant Steps III.” www.ginaparr.com
